We are a Buddhist Centre, committed to going for refuge to the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha. We offer a gateway to understanding the Buddha's teachings more deeply, as taught by Sangharakshita. This is offered for the benefit of all.
We are part of the Triratna Buddhist Community, a worldwide movement of people who engage with the Buddha’s teachings in the conditions of the modern world. Triratna is a Sanskrit term meaning 'three jewels' : the Buddha, Dharma (the Buddha’s teachings) and Sangha (the community of all those who follow the teachings).
The Glasgow Buddhist Centre started in 1973. We have been in our current premises on Sauchiehall Street since 1983. The Triratna Buddhist Order, originally called the Western Buddhist Order, was formed in 1968 in London by Urgyen Sangharakshita, an Englishman who was ordained and practised in India for 20 years before coming back to the UK.
We want to give the Buddha’s Dharma freely to Glasgow and to help it grow in Scotland. Our practice of dana, the basic Buddhist practice of generosity, is how we do that. We don’t want money to be an obstacle for those who come to our classes and events. Our centre is resourced entirely by the generosity of the community of people who come here.
