Bhante Urgyen Sangharakshita was the founder of the Triratna Buddhist Order in 1968 (known as the FWBO then).  For more information about his life and teachings check out his website.

what is a mitra?

Mitra means friend, and is someone who has chosen Triratna as their sangha, or spiritual community, and has ritually marked their commitment to living a Buddhist life.

what is a kesa?

A kesa is worn by members of the Triratna Buddhist Order who are given it when they are ordained.  It symbolises the commitment to the three jewels in their lives.

The Buddha, Dharma (his teachings) and the Sangha (the community of those who follow the teachings) are the three jewels of ‘Triratna’, which means three jewels in sanskrit.

what is "going for refuge"?

This is the central act in the life of a Triratna Buddhist Community practitioner. Following the example and teachings of the Buddha and the enlightened sangha, we too can help end suffering in the world.

what is ordination?

The ceremony in which a person becomes a member of the Triratna Buddhist Order. We train to join the order by deepening our capacity to go for refuge and are supported by existing order members.
